About Literate Voices
Literate Voices is an education and publishing non-profit dedicated to giving voice to those who have been silent. Our goal is to reach as many students as possible across the nation and the world and demonstrate through innovative curriculum, engaging and relevant readings and personal narrative projects that all students deserve to be heard. Our efforts over the past seven years have included creating a Literate Voices curriculum, training classroom teachers and working in classrooms alongside teachers to deliver instruction and engender discussion. We have worked to motivate and encourage hundreds of students in several school districts to gain academic, functional and critical literacy, and published seven anthologies of powerful student writing as a result. We continue to work with local schools and with various schools abroad to further this mission.
Dr. Jyothi Bathina is the founder and director of Literate Voices and is an Associate Professor of Education. A former high school English teacher and literacy coach, she has worked with students from every background and skill level, from East Side San Jose to the South Bronx, New York. She is a writer, blogger and educator who is passionate about ensuring that all children are provided with the opportunity to be academically, functionally and critically literate.
